Appendix 4 – CEE Ph.D. Student Professional Development Program and Award

Goal. Provide a structured professional development program for Ph.D. students or 2nd year M.S. students (intending to pursue a Ph.D.) that spans 3 years. Students completing the professional development program will be recognized with a “CEE Professional Development Award.”

Rationale. The literature shows that mentoring, a strong social network, and professional development are important for retaining Ph.D. students, and for placing Ph.D. students in top jobs. Hence, our plan focuses on integrating M.S. with Ph.D. students via peer-mentoring, providing social settings for students to interact, and providing opportunities for career and professional development.

Exceptions. Students who participate in a six-month or greater research experience outside of the university during their Ph.D. studies can substitute this experience for Year 1 or 3 of the professional development plan.

Reporting. Students who intend to participate in this program need to fill out the Intent-to- Participate form in the Attachment I of this document. After each year of participation in this program, students need to complete the Annual Progress Form. This form is in Attachment II of this document. Participating students are responsible for meeting the requirements of this program, and for completing the necessary forms in a timely manner.

Requirements. These are listed below. The order that the requirements are met can differ from those described (e.g., Year 2 and Year 3 requirements can be swapped), and there can be a gap year, but all requirements must be met in order to complete the program.
