Students gather to hear CEE alumni speak about their professional careers.

About 100 CEE students gathered in the Newmark Crane Bay October 14 to hear alumni speak about their engineering careers during the department’s second annual “CEE Life in the Real World.” The event was introduced last year to give students more access to career information through exposure to practicing engineers. Attendees also got a chance to mingle with alumni informally over pizza and ask questions in breakout sessions.

“The ability to have a one-on-one discussion with alumni across the table was the most interesting aspect of the event,” said CEE grad student Aditya Bhagath. He said the alumni shared “pointers on how to better equip ourselves not just technically, but also how to be prepared to face anything, like having to solve a problem that might not be in your area of expertise.”

The alumni speakers also gave helpful information on the value of joining professional organizations and taking business classes like economics and accountancy, as well as a description of the day-to-day activities of practicing engineers, Bhagath said.

The department thanks the following alumni for presenting and helping out with the breakout sessions:
  • William M. Barsella (BS 84)
  • Terrence K. Boyer (BS 87, MS 88)
  • Daniel F. Burke (BS 92, MS 93)
  • David J. Byrd (BS 79)
  • Michael J. Carlin (MS 01)
  • Lynne C. Chicoine (BS 78, MS 80)
  • Brian M. Dekker (BS 03, MS 04)
  • Lindsey L. Fasules (BS 05, MS 07)
  • Jeffrey R. Hill (BS 99)

  • Christopher P. Jepsen (BS 78, MS 80)
  • Paula C. Pienton (BS 85)
