A weekend of technical training, collaboration and inspiration is in store Nov. 4-6 as the Illinois hosts the Engineers Without Borders (EWB) Regional Training Workshop at the Illini Union.  Students from any major are invited to attend the event, which will include a career fair, hand-on workshops, free CPR and OSHA training, and refreshments.

EWB is an international nonprofit organization committed to advancing the quality of life in impoverished countries through socioeconomically and ecologically sustainable engineering projects. Students from all disciplines design and implement these projects. The University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign chapter is founded on the philosophy of helping developing countries while also holding local events to educate the public about sustainable development.

The EWB regional conference is an opportunity for members of the 35 Great Lakes student chapters to meet their peers, as well as members of the 15 professional chapters in the region. The conference consists of workshops that highlight the technical and leadership aspects of EWB. Conference event highlights will include an “Around the World” themed Illinites, a project-based lunch designed to facilitate interaction between members involved with similar projects, and a final “Living EWB” banquet and awards ceremony. There are also hands-on sessions on surveying, pouring concrete, and making bio-sand filters. Speakers will include the Illini Prosthetics Team, Father Stan Chu Ilo from the University of Toronto, and Professor Madhu Viswanathan from the College of Business at U of I.

Conference attendees will have the opportunity to meet and share ideas with students from other EWB chapters, as well as make professional contacts at the corporate networking event.

“Student-professional liaisons are a must,” said Conference Chair Amna Mahmud.  “They create the networks crucial to eventual mentorship. In addition, students and professionals alike will benefit from the range of workshops the conference will provide.”

Registration is $30 for unlimited access. Onsite registration is available in the Illini Union during November 4-5. For more information, email Mahmud at ewb.uiuc.2011@gmail.com
