A new seminar series co-sponsored by the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign and the Insurance Institute for Business & Home Safety (IBHS) will focus on promoting research and collaborations in the field of tornado science and engineering. The Tornado Hazard Wind Assessment and Reduction Symposium (THWARTS) / IBHS Natural Hazards Symposium Series will be held online on a planned monthly basis until sessions can be held in person.

The series aims to connect new students, academic researchers and industry partners with those established in the field; highlight historical and leading edge research developments; share student internship opportunities; and coalesce interdisciplinary tornado research. Forensic engineer and meteorologist Tim Marshall will deliver the inaugural lecture on Tuesday, October 27, 2020. A brief discussion period will follow the presentation. Read more about Marshall and sign up for the lecture here.

Future events will encompass a variety of formats including keynote addresses, student research presentations and panel sessions. The organizers invite your ideas for speakers, topics and formats. For more information about the seminar series, email thwartscontact@gmail.com.

The seminar series is sponsored by National Science Foundation Grants 2006613 (CAREER-IBHS) and 1748687 (UI).
