Professor Armando Duarte holds an M.Sc. degree from the Universidade Federal de Santa Catarina in Brazil and a Ph.D. degree from the University of Texas at Austin. Prior to joining the department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at the University of Illinois in August 2004, Professor Duarte was an Assistant Professor in the department of Mechanical Engineering at the University of Alberta in Canada. He also has served as a Visiting Professor in the department of Structural Engineering at the Escola de Engenharia de Sao Carlos, Universidade de Sao Paulo, Sao Carlos, Brazil, and has five years of industrial experience. He is affiliated with the Computational Science and Engineering Program of the UIUC.
Professor Duarte is a member of the United States Association for Computational Mechanics (USACM), the International Association for Computational Mechanics (IACM) and the American Academy of Mechanics (AAM). He is vice-chair of the USACM Specialty Committee on Meshfree Methods.
Dr. Duarte’s research interests include computational mechanics, three-dimensional computational fracture mechanics, multi-scale modeling and analysis of polycrystalline materials. His scientific publications in computational mechanics have been cited more than 550 times by other researchers in the field.
