John S. Popovics holds B.S. and M.S. degrees (Drexel University 1988 and 1990, respectively) in civil engineering, and a Ph.D. (The Pennsylvania State University 1994) in engineering science and mechanics. He has been on the faculty of the department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at the University of Illinois since January 2002. Before coming to the University of Illinois, he was an Assistant Professor at Drexel University and a Research Assistant Professor at Northwestern University.

Dr. Popovics teaches undergraduate and graduate level courses on materials properties, construction material corrosion and durability, concrete technology, and non-destructive testing.

Dr. Popovics is a member of the Acoustical Society of America, the American Society of Civil Engineers, the American Academy of Mechanics, the American Concrete Institute, the American Society for Nondestructive Testing and RILEM. He also participates as a voting member in five technical committees in these societies. He serves as associate editor of the Journal of Materials in Civil Engineering.

In 1999 Dr. Popovics was the recipient of the National Science Foundation's CAREER award and in 2001 was named a guest scientist at the German Federal Materials Research Institute (BAM-Berlin).

Research Overview: 

Dr. Popovics has two primary research interests. The first is non-destructive evaluation. In particular, he is interested in the use of mechanical waves (ultrasound and vibration) to assess the condition of civil engineering structures and pavement. His second research interest is the mechanical properties of cement-based infrastructure materials. His research findings have been published in over thirty articles in refereed technical journals and thirty conference proceedings. He is affiliated with the Center for Advanced Cement-Based Materials (ACBM).
