Information for International Applicants

International applicants should take special note of information provided below and read the Graduate College instructions for international applicants.

 

English Proficiency Requirement for Admission

All applicants whose native language is not English are required to submit the results of the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) or International English Language Testing System (IELTS) as evidence of English proficiency.  Official scores are required to be submitted directly from TOEFL/ETS or IELTS.  For more information, please visit  English Proficiency Requirements.

Please note: TOEFL or IELTS scores must be less than two years old from the first day of class at the proposed term of entry in order to be valid.

 

International Applications

International applicants who are sending all support documents in one package: Each letter of reference should be in an envelope that has been sealed by the person providing the reference.  Each transcript should be in an envelope that was sealed by the university providing the transcript. You can place all of the sealed, official envelopes in a larger envelope with any other support documents you are submitting.  These should be send to the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering:

Declaration and Certification of Finances

To be considered for admission, applicants from other countries must submit proof of adequate finances for the length of time they plan to study on this campus. You are required to submit current evidence (dated within 1 year) that you will have at least $45,758 per year for the duration of your studies. Applicants who do not provide satisfactory evidence of adequate finances will not be granted admission. International applicants must submit a Declaration and Certification of Finances form. This form includes a description of the estimated expenses and required procedure for verification of cash currently available and transferable.

The following are some guidelines for financial verification:

  •     The Declaration form must be signed by the person financing the student’s program.
  •     The bank account holder must be the person who signed the sponsor section on the Declaration and Certification of Finances form.
  •     Official bank statements must be on official bank letterhead—a copy is NOT acceptable.
  •     Bank statements must be dated within 1 year of the student's admission.
  •     Bank statements must be in English or include an English translation.
  •     Checking or savings account balances are acceptable.
  •     Certificates of Deposit (CDs) are acceptable but must mature by September 15th for the fall term of entry.
  •     Mutual funds, stocks, bonds, life insurance, paycheck stubs, and IRS returns are not acceptable.
  •     Financial support must be liquid assets. Investment accounts are not acceptable.
  •     We cannot accept faxed or emailed financial forms.
