Frequently Asked Questions for Transfer Students
Q: Does CEE accept transfer students?
A: The CEE program is very full, but we still accept highly qualified transfer students. In fact, we count on transfer students to fill our upper division courses.

Q: Am I qualified to transfer into CEE?
A: We look for two things. First, we want students to have strong academic skills to assure their success in the civil engineering curriculum. Second, we want students to have strong fit and an authentic passion for the discipline so that they become active and enthusiastic members of our student body. We are pleased to see a strong record with a GPA of 3.5 or better with As and Bs and no Cs in the technical coursework. We are also interested in your experiences and your aspirations reflected in your Personal Statement.

Q: What is the procedure for transferring in to CEE?
A: First, visit the College of Engineering office in 206 Engineering Hall to pick up a transfer petition. Prepare your petition by getting necessary signatures, writing your Personal Statement, and attaching your current DARS report. Then call CEE Undergraduate Coordinator Becky Stillwell (217-333-3812) to schedule a time to meet with Associate Head Professor David Lange. Prof. Lange meets with all potential transfer students, provides advice about coursework, and evaluates the petitions.
Q: When is the best time in my undergraduate program to transfer?
A: If you are in the College of Engineering, you should transfer after freshman year. If you are a University of Illinois student outside of the College, you should transfer after freshman year and after completing the first courses in math, Physics and Chemistry. If you are from outside the University of Illinois, you should complete your second year and come to the University of Illinois as a Junior transfer.

Q: I am a freshman. Can I transfer to CEE now?
A: We ask that freshmen wait until completion of their freshman year to petition for transfer into CEE. You may come to meet with us in April, but generally we will make decisions after the Spring semester grades are available.

Q: I’m not sure if I want to transfer to CEE. How can I learn more?
A: Our CEE Undergraduate Handbook is a great document for learning about the curriculum. Another good idea is to come to the department to see Undergraduate Coordinator Becky Stillwell or CEE Adviser Professor Liang Liu. In addition, some students may wish to take CEE195, a zero-credit class offered in fall semesters that addresses all aspects of civil engineering.
