CEE408 Railway Transportation Engineering, Fall
An introduction to highway-rail grade crossings and railroad track system design, components, roadbeds, and maintenance. This is followed by consideration of railroad rolling stock design, running gear and other mechanical components, train braking system design, function and dynamics, and locomotive design, operation and function. Quantitative analysis of train resistance and consequent power and train energy requirements including effects of aerodynamics, grade and curvature are covered. The course concludes with consideration of train speed, power, acceleration and an introduction to railway traffic control and signaling.

CEE409 Railroad Track Engineering, Fall
Railroad track engineering concepts, including track component and system design, construction, evaluation, maintenance, load distribution, and wheel/rail interaction. Topics covered include: Track layout and geometry; ballast and subgrade; ties; rail and fastenings; track analysis and design; special trackwork; grade crossings; track standards; and inspection, condition assessment, and asset management. 

CEE411 Railroad Proj Planning and Design, Spring
The course begins with review of train resistance, power, speed and acceleration calculation and then covers stringline diagrams, train scheduling and train stopping distance calculation. Concepts of temporal and spatial separation of trains to ensure safe and efficient use of equipment and infrastructure are introduced. Principal topics include train movement authority, track circuits and other train position monitoring systems, train control systems including: radio-based, wayside signals, cab signaling, positive train control (PTC), and special problems with interlocking design, operation, and control. Line capacity analysis is introduced along with the economics of traffic control systems.

CEE412 High Speed Rail Engineering, Fall
Although the basic elements of the technology resemble conventional rail transport, there are numerous engineering design differences, including the subgrade, track system, motive power, rolling stock, traffic control, power distribution system, traffic control and station design.

CEE498HRM High Speed Rail Construction Management*
This course will review the characteristics of a HSR construction project, and introduce the phases and processes of constructing a HSR system. The students will then learn how to manage HSR construction phases and processes. Students will learn the principles and methodology of preparing project charter, scope statement, management plan, project master schedule and schedule management plan; project cost and cost management plan; and project organization and quality management plan. Students will also learn how to manage the project risk, procurement and interfaces. Then students will be taught the principles of executing, monitoring and controlling a HSR construction project. 

CEE498HRP High Speed Rail Planning*
This course provides an introduction to planning of an HSR passenger transport system. Students learn about steps involved in HSR planning and methodologies for station and route selection, capital cost estimation, operation and maintenance costs estimation, ridership forecasting, economic analysis, project implementation and financing. Real case studies will be used to illustrate the application of the methodologies learned and for homework.
