Build Wind Turbines in Peru for Rural Communities Without Electricity

Please see the following message and attached pamphlet for information on the WindAid volunteer experience:

This is Helga from WindAid and I’m delighted to be back in touch with you again today to give you an update on what we’ve been up to recently and the opportunities we currently have to offer the scholars you teach.

Our year so far
2019 continues to be a great year for WindAid. So far this year, with the help of volunteers from all over the world we have installed six more wind turbines in communities across Peru, ensuring they have access to a source of clean, sustainable energy for many years to come. We have also been focusing heavily on efforts on in our research and design team, including the development of our first ever hybrid wind-solar system using lithium batteries for condensing water from the air. This, coupled with our collaboration with Airbus to refine our blade manufacturing processes, reflects our drive to build on all aspects of our engineering practice throughout 2019 and beyond.

Energy for education
Education has also been one of our priorities in recent months, with the aim of sustainability always at the forefront of our plans. With this in mind, our volunteers have been helping us to train community technicians in the functioning and maintenance of their turbines, so they are able to use them efficiently and independently in the future. This has also extended to the work we have been doing with young people in the communities we visit, creating the opportunity to learn the importance of a sustainable future across the generations.

A community in focus
This has especially been the case in Playa Blanca in the north of Peru, a village we have worked with for eight years now and a place we will be returning to this October, when we will be installing the last turbine and celebrating the culmination of an entirely energy independent community. It is the power of projects such as Playa Blanca that means we are more determined than ever to continue to strive to grow and widen the reach of WindAid’s potential to change lives.
In this way, we would really love to continue to count on your support. We truly believe volunteering with us can be life changing too, in that anyone from engineers, anthropologists, environmentalists to linguists and beyond can access phenomenal professional and life skills during their time with us. From the initial goal of constructing and installing a wind turbine, so much more can be found that can be of value to your students. They will find chances to build skills surrounding teamwork, project planning, problem solving and so much more, all with hands on-experience of a dynamic working environment in a unique and vibrant culture. Please forward this email and its attachments of our current opportunities to those you think would be interested - we can’t wait to welcome our next volunteer from University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign out here in Peru!
