CEE at Illinois department head and professor Ana P. Barros has been appointed to the Climate Security Roundtable of the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering and Medicine. The Climate Security Roundtable was established to support the Climate Security Advisory Council ‒ a joint partnership between the U.S. Intelligence Community and the Federal Science Community ‒ to “anticipate, prepare for, and ultimately prevent climate security crises from escalating into national security challenges and threats.” Barros was invited to serve on the basis of her unique expertise and ability to advance the Roundtable’s mission.

Barros has also been invited to join the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) Industry Leaders Council (ILC) for a two-year term. The ILC “engages senior leaders from industry, academia, government, and non-governmental organizations to advise ASCE’s board of direction on initiatives that can help solve key challenges facing the civil engineering profession.”

Barros joined CEE at Illinois in February 2021, where she is also the Donald Biggar Willett Chair of Engineering. Her primary research interests are in hydrology, hydrometeorology and environmental physics with a focus on water-cycle processes in the coupled land-atmosphere-biosphere system, particularly in regions of complex terrain. Barros has expertise in the area of water security and environmental sustainability, with emphasis on the study of water cycle processes taking place in the land-atmosphere-biosphere system.
