Members of the Water Environment Federation (WEF) student chapter at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign took first place at the Central States Water Environment Association Regional Student Design Competition in Madison, Wis., April 7 for their environmental design project, Providing Sanitation in Peri-Urban Slums of Nairobi, Kenya.

The group presented design alternatives for improved toilets. Their designs of wet and dry anaerobic digesters would intake wastewater and produce biogas that could be sold as electricity for a profit. More about their project is available on their website.

"Our win has also awarded us an invitation to compete at WEFTEC 2014 in New Orleans, La.," said CEE student Lance Langer, president of the WEF student chapter and one of the presenters at the competition. "We plan on attending and aspire to win the environmental category this time around."
