Professor Youssef Hashash will speak about his visit to Japan in the wake of the Tohoku earthquake and tsunami, Wednesday, May 4, 10-11 a.m. in the Coordinated Science Lab auditorium B02.

On March 11, Japan experienced a magnitude 9.0 earthquake and subsequent tsunami.  Numerous large aftershocks have occurred and continue to occur, some of which have caused additional damage.

Hashash traveled to Japan in April as part of a National Science Foundation-sponsored Geo-engineering Extreme Events Reconnaissance (GEER) team.  They visited Tokyo, areas further north in Sendai, and parts of the coast affected by the tsunami.

Hashash's presentation will focus on the response of engineered systems to ground shaking and the tsunami, as well as observed ground motions.
