CEE at Illinois professor Praveen Kumar has been awarded the Mahatma Gandhi Pravasi Samman award, which is given to non-resident Indians for “outstanding services, achievements and contributions for keeping the ‘Flag of India high.’”

“’Pravasi Samman’ translates to ‘Non-resident Honor,’” Kumar explained. “This prestigious recognition for global achievement is given to only about 30 people per year among over 16 million Indians living outside India. It is a tremendous honor to receive this prodigious recognition on a global stage.”

The award is given by the NRI Welfare Society of India, an organization established to strengthen bonds between India and non-resident Indians. The award will be presented on September 27, 2017 at the Global Indian Summit at the House of Lords in London.

Kumar is the Colonel Harry F. and Frankie M. Lovell Endowed Professor of Civil and Environmental Engineering and has been on the CEE at Illinois faculty since 1995, where he teaches courses in hydrosystems engineering, engineering modeling under uncertainty, surface water hydrology, stochastic hydrology, non-linear methods in hydrology and hydroinformatics. His research focuses on innovative solutions to water and sustainability challenges, as well as the study and modeling of complex hydrologic systems.
