Maidment Fellowship in Hydrosystems Engineering
The Maidment Fellowship in Hydrosystems Engineering was established by David and Helen Maidment to celebrate their graduate education at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign from 1972 to 1976. David came to the Hydrosystems Laboratory in August 1972, and was one of the last PhD students of Ven Te Chow, founder of the Hydrosystems Laboratory. He received his MS and PhD degrees in Civil Engineering in 1974 and 1976, respectively. David and Helen were married in February 1973, and came to campus as newly-weds, four days after their wedding. Helen studied Science Education at Illinois and graduated with an MS in that field in 1975.
Beginning with his studies with Ven Te Chow, David Maidment specialized in surface water hydrology, and together with Ven Te Chow and Larry Mays published the well-known text book "Applied Hydrology" (McGraw-Hill, 1988). He was also Editor-in-Chief of the "Handbook of Hydrology", (McGraw-Hill, 1993). In 2011, he received the Distinguished Alumnus Award of the CEE Alumni Association "For significant and lasting impact on teaching, research and practice in the fields of hydrology and water resource engineering, including the pioneering of geographical information systems applications in hydrology and technologies that have been adopted by national and international institutions". In 2016, he was elected to the National Academy of Engineering "For development of geographic information systems applied to hydrologic processes."
