Information for International Applicants
International applicants should take special note of information provided below and read the Graduate College instructions for international applicants.
English Proficiency Requirement for Admission
All applicants whose native language is not English are required to submit the results of the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) or International English Language Testing System (IELTS) as evidence of English proficiency. Official scores are required to be submitted directly from TOEFL/ETS or IELTS. For more information, please visit English Proficiency Requirements.
Please note: TOEFL or IELTS scores must be less than two years old from the first day of class at the proposed term of entry in order to be valid.
Requesting Official Scores
Applicants should request that the Educational Testing Service send TOEFL scores to the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign using our institution code number 1836. All scores are reported to a central database where all departments can access them. The department code recommended by the Graduate College is 00, or you may use department codes 65 (Civil Engineering), 69 (Engineering, other) 46 (Environmental Science).
Declaration and Certification of Finances
All international applicants requesting visa eligibility documents (I-20 or DS-2019) are required to demonstrate that they have adequate financial resources to cover the cost of their education while in the United States. Financial documentation is required in order for visa eligibility documents (I20 or DS-2019) to the U.S. to be issued. You are required to submit current evidence (dated within 1 year) that you will have at least $58,901 (2018) per year for the duration of your studies. The Declaration and Certification of Finances form includes a description of the estimated expenses and required procedure for verification of cash currently available and transferable. The application also includes instructions for providing evidence of financial resources.
CEE does not require evidence of financial resources at the time you submit your application. If you are approved for admission, but a funding offer is not made to you, we will ask you to email your financial documentation to katia@illinois.edu.
