The Shannon & Wilson Inc. Stanley D. Wilson Award supports one or more graduate students enrolled in a masters or Ph.D. program related to geotechnical engineering.
William B. Shannon and Stanley D. Wilson formed Shannon & Wilson in 1954, which developed into a national consulting firm dedicated to providing quality services in the fields of geotechnical engineering, environmental engineering, geology and natural resources. Shannon & Wilson Inc. is an employee-owned firm headquartered in Seattle with offices across the United States, recognized by clients and peers to be among the leaders in the nation in geotechnical and environmental consulting.
Shannon & Wilson created the Shannon & Wilson Inc. Stanley D. Wilson Endowed Fund to honor one of its founders and to perpetuate the standards for which he stood. Stan Wilson was one of the early pioneers in the fields of geotechnical engineering and instrumentation, and was the inventor of numerous instruments, including the slope indicator, which monitors slope movements. He traveled worldwide applying his new methods and measurement techniques to challenging projects. Wilson was a good friend and colleague of Ralph Peck and lectured at the University on numerous occasions. The relationship that Wilson developed between Shannon & Wilson Inc. and the University of Illinois continues today with many University alumni employed at the firm.
