Wilson H. Tang CEE International Scholarship

This endowed scholarship was established by Professor Tang’s family in 2017. Professor Wilson H. Tang spent his early years in Hong Kong and received his bachelor’s (1966) and master’s (1967) degrees from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and his Ph.D. from Stanford University (1969). He had a distinguished academic career; was on the faculty at Illinois for 27 years before joining Hong Kong University of Science & Technology in 1996 as head of Civil & Environmental Engineering. He authored more than 250 publications and co-authored a book (with A. H-S Ang) titled Probability Concepts in Engineering Planning & Design which has been widely adopted by top universities worldwide and was translated into five languages.

His outstanding achievements were internationally recognized by numerous awards and honors, including the State of the Art Award, TK Hsieh Award from the Institution of Civil Engineers UK, Guggenheim Fellow, Garza Best Paper Award and three Hall of Fame Awards – one from US Offshore Energy Center 2002, and two from ASCE Offshore Energy Center 2013 and 2014. He also received the Natural Science Award from the Ministry of Education of China and many others. 

This scholarship is awarded to international students in the department with preference to freshman students from China, Hong Kong or Taiwan.
