Professor Marcelo Garcia has been named a Doctor Honoris Causa of the National University of Cordoba, Argentina. This is the highest academic honor conferred by the university, which was founded in 1613 and is one of the oldest on the American Continent.

"The extra significance of this honor for me has to do with the fact that I was born in the City of Cordoba," Garcia said. "Because of the university being so old, the city of Cordoba is known as 'La Docta,' which translates to 'The Wise.'"

Garcia will receive the honor in person on May 20, 2024, after which he will deliver a lecture.

Garcia has been on the CEE at Illinois faculty since 1990, where he is the M.T. Geoffrey Yeh Endowed Chair in Civil Engineering and Director of the Ven Te Chow Hydrosystems Laboratory. His current research interests are in fluvial hydraulics; sedimentation hazards, riverine-deltaic morphodynamics, dam safety, engineering with nature and history of Roman aqueducts.
