Professor Murugesu Sivapalan is the recipient of the 2022 Tau Beta Pi Daniel C. Drucker Eminent Faculty Award. Sivapalan was selected for this award by the President of Tau Beta Pi and the Executive Associate Dean for The Grainger College of Engineering in recognition of his “extraordinary record of accomplishment, both within and beyond the boundaries of this university.”
Sivapalan’s research focuses on understanding variability in rainfall-runoff processes across scales, places and time, and uses it to advance river flow predictions. Siva has made breakthrough contributions to river flow predictions in two dimensions: in the space dimension, by envisioning flow patterns as the legacy of coevolution of climate, vegetation, soils and landforms with water; and in the time dimension, by attributing long-term fluctuations of river flows to feedbacks in coupled human-water systems.
His many honors include the International Hydrology Prize from the International Association of Hydrological Sciences, Robert E. Horton Medal from the American Geophysical Union, John Dalton and Alfred Wegener Medals from the European Geosciences Union, and the Prince Sultan bin Abdulaziz International Prize for Water (Creativity Prize) for his role in founding and growing the new field of socio-hydrology. Sivapalan is Fellow of the American Geophysical Union, the Australian Academy of Technology and Engineering, and the American Association for the Advancement of Science.
The Tau Beta Pi Daniel C. Drucker Eminent Faculty Award is an annual recognition given to a distinguished faculty member of Grainger College for dedication to academic excellence and exemplary contributions to the understanding of their field. Sivapalan will receive the award at the Grainger Faculty Awards Ceremony on April 25, 2022.
