Biography

Amelia I. Patrick is a structural engineer in the Houston, Texas, area. She founded Thalia Engineering Studio in early 2012 and has been an adjunct professor at the University of Houston – Downtown since 2013. Prior to her current appointments, she was a civil and structural engineer with Walter P Moore in Houston and with Wiss Janney Elstner in Los Angeles.

While at Walter P Moore, Patrick performed design modeling and analysis for a two-level circular pedestrian bridge, dubbed the “Miracle Bridge,” for Texas Children’s Hospital. She served as deputy project manager for the infrastructural design for the ExxonMobil corporate campus north of Houston. Other notable projects include the Hunters Creek Village City Hall Expansion, the Menil Collection Campus Master Plan, TransSITE Art Gallery and Studio, the Rice University Wiess College Masters’ House civil site plan, and the UTMB-Galveston Flood Hazard Mitigation Reports.

In December 2011, Patrick served as one of eight American women scientists in their early- to mid-careers to travel to Brazil on a U.S.-Brazil exchange program designed to recruit, retain and advance women in the science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) fields. Delegates were chosen by the U.S. Department of State from a pool of more than 500 applicants, demonstrating the extensive interest in opportunities for women in STEM to connect with colleagues in the U.S. and abroad.

In her so-called spare time, Patrick enjoys maintaining an active presence in the Houston music scene with her composer husband, Joseph, and serving as a troop leader to a group of fifth grade Girl Scouts.
