Biography

Mr. Ruppert holds a bachelor of science degree in civil engineering from Princeton University (1977) and a master of science in Technology Management from the University of Pennsylvania (1999). After graduating from Princeton in 1977, he began his railroad career at Amtrak as a Junior Engineer on the Northeast Corridor. Over the course of the next 35 years he held positions covering most aspects of railway track engineering, maintenance operations and track research. In his last assignment at Amtrak before retiring in 2012 he was responsible for managing and directing all aspects of track design, surveying, track standards and specifications, and engineering systems development. As a part of the University of Illinois’ RailTEC staff he used his experience to help direct research programs, develop course curriculum for railway engineering courses, and help mentor civil engineering students who are interested in pursuing careers in railroad engineering. Mr. Ruppert is also a part time consultant with HNTB Corporation involved in railway track design and maintenance.
