CEE professor Bill Spencer has been elected to the Academy of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineers at Missouri University of Science and Technology (Missouri S&T). The MAE Academy was founded to recognize outstanding alumni from the Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering at Missouri S&T for their contributions to the profession, leadership, and involvement with Missouri S&T.
Though Spencer would go on to make his career as a civil engineer, he earned his bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering from Missouri S&T (then known as the University of Missouri, Rolla) in 1981. As a new member of the MAE Academy, he will help contribute to their mission of improving the educational experience of the department’s students and bringing recognition to the Department.
Spencer is the Nathan M. and Anne M. Newmark Endowed Chair in Civil Engineering with CEE at Illinois. His research interests focus primarily on structural health monitoring, structural control, cyberinfrastructure applications, stochastic fatigue, stochastic computational mechanics, and natural hazard mitigation. He is a Distinguished Member of the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE), the North American Editor in Chief of Smart Structures and Systems, the Executive Managing Editor of Earthquake Engineering and Engineering Vibration, the past-president of the Asia-Pacific Network of Centers for Research in Smart Structures Technology, and a Foreign Member of the Polish Academy of Sciences, the Chinese Academy of Engineering, and the Engineering Academy of Japan.
Spencer officially joined the MAE Academy at the 29th Annual Induction Ceremony that took place October 24-25, 2024, on the Missouri S&T campus.
