Study Abroad: Finding inspiration in unlikely places

Q&A

"Broaden your   perspective"

How a civil engineering student found inspiration for her career touring healthcare facilities in Costa Rica

Interviewed by Olivia Grubisich

Lizet Alvarez spent her winter break on a study abroad trip to Costa Rica. As an aspiring civil engineer with a primary concentration in energy-water-environmental-sustainability (EWES) and a secondary concentration in construction management, the trip focused on exactly what you might expect: international perspectives in healthcare.

Through this College of Applied Health Sciences-led excursion, students had the opportunity to get an up-lose look at the Costa Rican healthcare system.  For Lizet, the trip not only broadened her global perspective, but helped her find fresh inspiration for her future career.

How did you find out about this opportunity, and how did you apply?

Becky Stillwell shared this opportunity with everyone in the civil & environmental engineering department, and I applied through the Study Abroad website. The department of health and kinesiology also promoted the program.

As a civil engineering student, what made you interested in pursuing a study abroad opportunity with a focus on healthcare?

I was interested in this opportunity because I believe global learning is extremely important. Additionally, I wanted to gain more experience in healthcare-related topics. This journey was transformative, offering me a firsthand look into a healthcare model deeply rooted in accessibility, sustainability, and community well-being.

How did your experience align with your goals & career aspirations?

To start, these lessons have prepared me for my upcoming summer internship with Alberici Constructors, a company that contributes to the construction of many healthcare related projects. Overall, this experience has shown me the importance of incorporating principles of accessibility, sustainability, and community-centered solutions into my work.

Tell us about some of the things you did while in Costa Rica!

During the program, we visited various medical facilities and had the chance to interact with dedicated healthcare professionals. One memorable highlight was hearing from a seasoned doctor who shared insights into Costa Rica’s public health initiatives and emphasized the value of global learning in medical practice. We also toured a medical school, where I was impressed by their efficient, hands-on approach to education, starting immediately after high school.

Any other particular memories that stand out above the rest?

A particularly impactful moment for me was visiting a private eye clinic where American doctors collaborated with local communities to provide free vision care. Seeing their compassion and commitment to serving others left a lasting impression, reminding me of the importance of passion and purpose in any career.

What advice would you give a fellow civil or environmental engineering student who was interested in study abroad, but isn't sure if the program they've found will be the right fit?

I would say 100% go for it! Even if it doesn’t seem like a perfect fit at first, studying abroad is one of the most enriching experiences I’ve had at the U of I. It broadens your perspective, enhances your education, and opens doors to new opportunities.
