Mariñas receives Excellence in Environmental Engineering and Science Education Award

Professor Benito J. Mariñas has received the 2024 Excellence in Environmental Engineering and Science Education Award. Presented jointly by the American Academy of Environmental Engineers and Scientists (AAEES) and the Association of Environmental Engineering and Science Professors (AEESP), this award recognizes educators who have made significant contributions to the profession in the area of educating practitioners. 

Mariñas receives this award in recognition of his excellence in teaching undergraduate and graduate students and for his outstanding research on developing fundamentals of the science of water disinfection. He was nominated by CEE Professor Emeritus Vern Snoeyink. 

Mariñas joined the CEE faculty in 1995. He is the Ivan Rachoff Professor of Environmental Engineering and served as CEE’s Department Head from 2015-2020. His research interests include various mechanistic aspects of chemical and ultraviolet light disinfection processes and membrane technologies for the particular application of controlling waterborne pathogens. He has additionally taught graduate and undergraduate courses covering various fundamental, laboratory experimentation and design aspects of environmental engineering and science with particular emphasis in physico-chemical treatment processes for water quality control.

The award will be presented to Mariñas at the AAEES Excellence in Environmental Engineering and Science Awards Luncheon and Technical Conference.
