CEE Professor Arif Masud has received the 2026 International Association of Computational Mechanics O.C. Zienkiewicz Award. The Zienkiewicz Award is one of the highest honors given to professionals in the field of computational mechanics.
Every two years, IACM confers its awards program to recognize individuals who have made significant contributions in basic or applied computational mechanics. The Zienkiewicz Award, which was established in honor of pioneering computational mechanics professor Olgierd Cecil Zienkiewicz, specifically recognizes individuals who have made outstanding and sustained contributions to the discipline, and whose research significantly advances theories and methods with lasting impact.
Special contributions in leadership and administration, industrial applications, and engineering analysis are also considered.
At the IACM 2026 International Conference, where Masud accepted the award, IACM specifically lauded his work in stabilized and variational multiscale finite element methods for complex coupled systems, as well as several other of his research contributions.
The Zienkiewicz Award is one of several prestigious recognitions Masud has received throughout the course of his career, with one of his most recent accolades including being named a Distinguished Member of the American Society of Civil Engineers.
At the University of Illinois, Masud is the John and Eileen Blumenschein Professor and the Robert H. Dodds Faculty Scholar in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering in The Grainger College of Engineering. He holds joint appointments in Mechanical Science and Engineering and Aerospace Engineering, and is also a Professor of Biomedical and Translational Sciences in the Carle-Illinois College of Medicine. He is the inaugural director of the Center for Manufacturing Smart Infrastructure, where he has helped advance interdisciplinary research linking infrastructure, computation, and advanced manufacturing.
