Professor Marcelo H. Garcia has been named a member of the Board of Consultants for the Miami Conservancy District (MCD), located in Dayton, Ohio. The MCD was formed after the Great Miami River flooded Dayton in 1913, killing 360 people. Since then, the MCD has been devoted to flood protection, water stewardship and river recreation. Members of the Board offer feedback and advice to MCD related to this important mission.
CEE at Illinois alumni Gabriel Fernandez (MS 72, PhD 77), who was a Visiting Professor, Lecturer and Research Engineer at CEE for many years, Anthony E. Fiorato (MS 68, PhD 71), Michael A. Hendron (BS 84, MS 85) and John D. Smart (MS 66, PhD 69) are also members of the Board. Previous members include former CEE professors Ralph B. Peck and Alfred J. “Skip” Hendron Jr. (Michael’s father). Hendron Jr. chaired the MCD Board of Consultants from 2010 until 2020.
Garcia has been on the CEE at Illinois faculty since 1990, where he is the M.T. Geoffrey Yeh Endowed Chair in Civil Engineering and Director of the Ven Te Chow Hydrosystems Laboratory. His current research interests are in fluvial hydraulics; sedimentation hazards, riverine-deltaic morphodynamics, dam safety, engineering with nature and history of Roman aqueducts.
