Mesri wins OPAL Award

Gholamreza Mesri has been named winner of the 2022 American Society of Civil Engineers OPAL Award in the education category, for demonstrated excellence in furthering civil engineering education.

CEE at Illinois professor Gholamreza Mesri has been named winner of the 2022 American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) OPAL Award, in the education category. The annual OPAL (Outstanding Projects And Leaders) awards honor civil engineers for career achievements in each of five categories: construction, design, education, government and management. Mesri received the award for demonstrated excellence in furthering civil engineering education. 

Mesri is the Ralph B. Peck Professor of Civil Engineering at the University of Illinois, where he teaches advanced undergraduate and graduate courses in geotechnical engineering. Mesri has taught at the University of Illinois for more than 50 years. He is regarded as a leading international expert on the behavior of soft clays and has written more than 150 papers published in leading geotechnical engineering journals and in published conference proceedings. He has also received many awards for his research, including the Norman Medal twice, the Thomas A. Middlebrooks Award, and the Karl Terzaghi Award from ASCE. He is also the co-author with Karl Terzaghi and Ralph B. Peck of the 3rd Edition of Soil Mechanics in Engineering Practice.
