Professor Billie F. Spencer Jr. has been named a 2023 Distinguished Member of the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE). Distinguished Membership is the highest honor bestowed by ASCE, and is granted to ASCE Members or Fellows who have attained eminence in some branch of engineering, including the fields of engineering education and construction. Spencer is one of only ten members to receive this honor in 2023.
Spencer has been on the CEE at Illinois faculty since 2002, where he is the Nathan M. and Anne M. Newmark Endowed Chair in Civil Engineering at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign. He is Director of the Smart Structures Technology Laboratory and the Center for Infrastructure Resilience in Cities as Livable Environments. His research interests are primarily in the areas of smart wireless sensor technology, damage detection and health monitoring, structural control, stochastic fatigue, stochastic computational mechanics, earthquake engineering and civil engineering applications of information technology.
Among Spencer’s many honors are election as a Foreign Member of the Engineering Academy of Japan, Chinese Academy of Engineering and Polish Academy of Sciences.
The new class of Distinguished Members will be inducted during ASCE’s Annual Convention in Chicago, October 18-21, 2023.
