Signature structures—including the net positive energy Masdar headquarters in Abu Dhabi, the exciting new Dallas Cowboys stadium, and the new I-70 bridge over the Mississippi River in St. Louis—are among the topics planned for the 11th Annual Structural Engineering Conference being held April 8 on the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign campus. Sponsored by the Structures Faculty at the University, the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering, and the Office of Continuing Education, the annual conference will be held at the Illini Union.
“We have excellent speakers from around the country coming to present important and timely topics on structural engineering design and practice,” said Jerry Hajjar, a professor of Civil and Environmental Engineering at Illinois and chair of this year’s conference.
Several significant topics will be discussed, including:
- Federal Surface Transportation Program Reauthorization and Outlook: Kenyon Gleason from the American Road and Transportation Builders Association in Washington, D.C. will lead off the conference with an important summary and outlook for the Federal Surface Transportation Program reauthorization.
- High-Rise Design: Bill Baker and Bradley Young of Skidmore, Owings & Merrill in Chicago will present the Infinity Tower in Dubai. This beautiful, spiraling structure represents an outstanding engineering achievement.
- ASCE-7 2010 Wind Load Provisions: Larry Griffis of Walter P. Moore and Associates will present the new ASCE-7 2010 wind load provisions.
- Steel Gusset Plate Design: Prof. Donald White of Georgia Tech will present the latest research and recommendations for the design of steel gusset plates in truss bridges in the wake of the 2007 I-35W bridge collapse in Minneapolis.
The one-day conference brings together structural engineering practitioners, government officials, researchers, and students to discuss new developments in the field of structural engineering.
