CEE assistant professor Tugce Baser and CEE alumnus Ozgun Alp Numanoglu (MS 14, PhD 19) of Schnabel Engineering will present the webinar, “The 2023 Kahramanmaras earthquake sequence, Turkey: UIUC geotechnical reconnaissance team observations,” Friday, March 31, at 5:30 p.m. (CST). In February 2023, a sequence of M7.7 and M7.6 earthquakes followed by significant aftershocks caused devastation over several provinces of Turkey and Syria. Baser and Numanoglu, both from the region affected by the earthquakes, were part of a team from CEE who traveled to the region shortly thereafter to survey the damage. This presentation focuses on the team’s preliminary geotechnical and geo-structural observations and investigations, including liquefaction manifestations, liquefaction induced ground and structural settlements, slope and earth dam deformations and instabilities.
