Professor Emeritus William L. Gamble (MS 61, PhD 63) has been elected an Honorary Member of the American Concrete Institute (ACI) “for lifetime achievements in teaching, structural engineering and contributions to ACI; particularly in the analysis and design of buildings, bridges and tunnel systems.”
Gamble joined the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign in 1963, after earning his bachelor’s degree from Kansas State University in 1959 and his M.S. (1961) and Ph.D. (1962) from CEE at Illinois. He spent a year as a Fulbright Fellow in Australia from 1962-1963.
A registered Structural Engineer in the state of Illinois, Gamble has taught five different undergraduate and graduate courses in the areas of reinforced and prestressed concrete, as well as a course on the fire resistance of structures. He is co-author with Robert Park of New Zealand of the book “Reinforced Concrete Slabs” (Wiley, 2nd Ed., 2000). He has served as a member or chair on numerous committees within ACI.
Gamble is a Life Member of the American Society of Civil Engineers, a member of the Prestressed Concrete Institute, the American Society for Testing and Materials, and the Structural Engineers Association of Illinois.
